FERNDALE, Wash. — A 74-year-old Sandy Point Heights man is in Whatcom County Jail after reportedly shooting another man in the back with a shotgun Wednesday, August 7th.

According to the probable cause statement provided by Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Kevin Hester there were multiple callers about 7:30pm to the What-Comm 9-1-1 Center who reported hearing 2 shots, a male yelling, seeing someone “waving a gun around” and that someone was shot at but it was not certain they had been hit. Multiple deputies were dispatched to the 3700 block of Sinclair Drive.

Deputies located the victim at Slater Road and Haxton Way. He reported he had been living in a trailer on the Sinclair Drive property. That evening the property owner, identified later as Raymond M Darrow, “was drunk and belligerent.” The victim told deputies that Darrow approached him, yelling to get off his property. The victim said as he was leaving, Darrow shot him in the back.

The victim declined medical aid but deputies noted his wounds appeared he had been shot in the back with a shotgun. The victim stated, “he did not want to be a victim of the Assault 1st Degree, Felony Harassment and Malicious Mischief 3rd Degree,” according to the probable cause statement.

Deputies and Lummi Police officers at the Sinclair Drive property attempted to make contact with Darrow and have him leave the residence. Darrow told them to go away and warned “of incoming fire and shot into the side of the trailer with a black pump action shotgun.”

The road was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic, nearby residences were evacuated and a perimeter established around Darrow’s property.

It was determined Darrow had 1 arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of felony harassment and 2 arrest warrants regarding reckless driving and driving under the influence charges.

Darrow eventually came out of the residence and was taken into custody for the warrants. He also faces a charge of reckless endangerment related to firing his shotgun in a residential neighborhood.

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence and a shotgun was seized for evidence. Multiple other guns and ammunition inside the residence were also taken for safekeeping according to the probable cause statement.

As of the morning of August 9th, Darrow remained in custody at the Whatcom County Jail.
