3 newly certified paramedics recognized during Fire Commissioners meeting

FERNDALE, Wash. — 3 newly certified paramedics were recognized during the Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) Commissioners Meeting at the Washington Street Fire Station #41 at 2020 Washington Street yesterday, October 10th.

The former Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Ryan Pavitt, Wesley Segar and Jody Engels, attended a joint paramedic training program that included Bellingham Fire Department and WCFD7 EMTs. They went through a rigorous 2-year training according to WCFD7 Medical Services Division Chief Ben Boyko.

Boyko said funding for the certification program held at at Bellingham Technical College came from a grant received by BFD and funds from the Whatcom County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levy approved in 2016.

After completing the training and achieving their certifications, the former EMTs are now certified paramedics.

The graduates now have positions as WCFD7 paramedics assigned to Medic 45 and, according to Boyko, a couple of the graduates had already “pulled a couple shifts.” Medic 45, while dispatched out of WCFD7, serves other parts of Whatcom County outside WCFD7 boundaries.
