Air quality returns to ‘Unhealthy for some’ range

Air monitoring history from NWCAA air monitoring station on Loomis Trail in Custer station (August 7, 2017).

Air quality had returned to the ‘Good’ range recently after spending days in the ‘Moderate’ and ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ due to smoke from wildfires in British Columbia interior making its way southward across the border.

But, air quality reported from the Loomis Trail Road air monitoring station went from ‘Good’ to ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ and returned to ‘Good’ over a 24-hour period Sunday.

Today, Monday, August 7th, air quality degraded again into the ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ range by 10am after being reported in the ‘Good’ range at 8am. Air quality continued to degrade into the high end of the ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,’ getting halfway to the ‘Unhealthy’ range (see graphic).

The National Weather Service has extended, yet again, an air quality alert through noon Thursday.

Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, infants, children, adults older than 65, pregnant women, or who have had a stroke. These people should limit time spent outdoors when air quality is reported in the ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ range.

If air quality is reported in the ‘Unhealthy’ range, everyone would be advised to limit time spent outdoors. Everyone should avoid exercising outdoors (including sports teams) and choose non-strenuous indoor activities. People with asthma, respiratory infection, diabetes, lung or heart disease, or have had a stroke should stay indoors. Infants, children, pregnant women and adults over age 65 should also stay indoors.
