All WA state K-12 public schools to close – including Ferndale schools

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Today, March 13th, it was announced that all Whatcom County public schools would be close from Tuesday, March 17th through Friday, April 24th.

The Ferndale School District issued an announcement about 2pm today.

In coordination with the Whatcom County Health Department, Whatcom County superintendents have decided to close public school districts in Whatcom County no later than Tuesday, March 17 through at least Friday, April 24. The Ferndale School District will be open Monday, March 16th.

… we are working on learning plans, childcare, and nutritional services. Additional information will be coming to each school district’s staff and families in the coming days.

The Seattle Times reported today “Gov. Jay Inslee announced Friday that he is mandating the closure of all Washington schools from March 17, through at least April 24.”

Ferndale School officials emphasized in a letter to families, “when school is cancelled, all athletics and activities are also cancelled.”

COVID-19-related declarations leading up to today’s announcement

  • January 31st – US Department of Health declared a public health emergency
  • February 29th – Washington State proclaimed a public health emergency
  • March 10th – Whatcom County declared a public health emergency
  • March 11th – The World Health Organization (WHO) identified COVID-19 as a pandemic

Earlier today, WWU officials announced they would be continuing online remote instruction during spring quarter and delaying the start of spring quarter classes to Monday, April 6th. They are currently planning to return to on-campus classes on Monday, April 27th.

Whatcom County Health Department reported that, as of today, there has been 1 confirmed case of COVID-19 in the county and 35 people had been tested with negative results. This data is being provided on the My Ferndale News Health Dashboard along with current seasonal flu data.
