An opportunity to view a total lunar eclipse tonight – clouds willing

Typically January in the Ferndale area means cloudy skies but tonight, Sunday, January 20th, the night of a lunar eclipse, clear skies seem possible.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and Earth align and the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon

Experts say a partial eclipse will begin tonight about 7:30pm. The total eclipse will be achieved about 8:40pm and last until about 9:45pm when it will begin the transition back through the partial eclipse phase until 10:50pm revealing the full moon.

The moon will begin it path across the night sky from the northeast shortly after 4pm.
