Attempted car theft at Pilot Travel Center lands one in jail

A man visiting the Pilot Travel Center on Main Street noticed his vehicle being driven from its parking spot and confronted the would-be thief.

According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Bill Hatchett, this encounter happened around 8am Friday, December 29th, 2017. Hatchett said the suspect got out of the vehicle and began to assault the victim by punching and elbowing him as the victim tried to restrain the would-be thief.

Police officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.

It was discovered later, while detained by Ferndale Police, that the suspect was armed with 2 knives. He was also discovered to be in possession of a glass pipe commonly used to consume controlled substances and several pills that were later identified as Clonazepam and Suboxin according to Hatchett.

Ultimately, Logan S. Carmona, age 29, was booked into the Whatcom County Jail. Court documents indicate Carmona has been charged with

  • Motor vehicle theft, a Class B felony
  • Assault in the 4th degree, a gross misdemeanor
  • 2 charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class C felony

When booked into the jail, Carmona was also charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and failure to appear on a charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

The court set bail at $20,000 for Carmona. According to jail records, he was still in custody as of 3pm, January 4th.
