Bakery reopens on 3rd Avenue

Barb’s Pies and Pastries recently moved from the Carnation Oxford Building on Main Street to the previous location of the Checkered Apron at 5679 3rd Avenue. They opened quietly this week for a few days and expect to begin offering a full menu of freshly baked items when they open Tuesday morning, July 25th.

Owner Barb O’Brine had hoped to make the move and reopen in June after the Checkered Apron was closed back in May. But encountered a variety of delays along the way.

According to O’Brine, beginning Tuesday, there will be a morning selection of freshly made pastry items and a lunch/afternoon selection.

On the morning menu from 7am to 10am, customers can expect to find a variety of donuts, cinnamon rolls and scones as well as ham & cheese puffs, danishes and Barb’s popular apple and cherry blossoms.

On the lunch/afternoon menu, customers can also expect to find savory scones, Broccoli/Cheddar rolls, individual & family meat pies (baked and ready-to-bake), cookies, éclairs, individual and full-size pies, cup cakes and ice cream treats.

One element of the new location yet to be accomplished is the addition of a screen door to the entrance. “When I was growing up, there was a bakery across the street [from the 3rd Avenue location] and it had a screen door. It made a racket when it closed behind customers as they walked in and out. Hearing that door while smelling fresh baked goods is going to bring back some great memories of our hometown bakery.”
