A kayaker was airlifted from Lummi Island to a Bellingham hospital shortly after noon on Saturday, March 17th after capsizing in their kayak near Legoe Bay.

A dog-walker passing by the Lummi Island beach at the corner of W Shore Drive and Legoe Bay Road noticed the kayaker on the beach and contacted 911 about 11:30am.

According to Whatcom County Fire District 11 Fire Chief Duncan McLane, their patient was found to be suffering from exposure due to having been in the cold Puget Sound water. The kayaker told medics they had launched their kayak from Lummi Island, capsized and been floating in the water with a life jacket for about an hour before reaching the beach according to McLane.

McLane said officials were initially concerned others may have been with the kayaker and may have also been in the water but that was ultimately ruled out.

Airlift Northwest took off with the patient onboard and headed to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center 33 minutes after the initial dispatch McLane said.
