Silver Reef Hotel and Casino guests got an early wake up call as Lummi Nation and Ferndale Police officers had everyone evacuate the hotel about 3:30am this morning due to a reported bomb threat.
The threat was related to a robbery reported by an employee at the casino cash cage shortly after 3am. According to radio transmissions between What-Comm 911 dispatchers and Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office personnel, a call was received from a casino employee saying an off-duty employee had come to the casino’s cash cage requesting assistance with “bagging some money.” The off-duty employee then left the casino in a black pickup.
The off-duty employee minutes later called What-Comm 911 from a location in the 2700 block of Douglas Road to say they had been forced at gunpoint by a male to get the cash. The male reportedly had left in a black 4-door sedan. The off-duty employee said the male had mentioned to them he was going to place a bomb in the casino.
While the hotel and casino were being evacuated, law enforcement began their investigation of the robbery.
About 6:30am, it was reported law enforcement had located an unspecified amount of cash on Lampman Road near Olson Road.
A person at the hotel reported guests had been allowed to return to their rooms.
