Fan causes residential fire

Two engines, a rescue unit and aid unit from Whatcom County Fire District 17 (WCFD17) and an engine from Whatcom County Fire District 7 were dispatched to structure fire about 3am in the 4300 block of Decatur Drive in Sandy Point Heights.

Upon arrival crews found a bathroom fan had overheated and caught fire burning the ceiling before falling and burning portions of the floor.

An occupant woke to the sound of the fan hitting the floor and doused it with water before exiting the home.

The only smoke detector had been incorrectly installed and did not alert the occupants.

The damage estimate was about $1000.

WCFD17 Fire Chief Jim Petrie said, “This was a very lucky family that narrowly avoided a tragedy. This is a good reminder to everyone to be sure you have working smoke detectors in your home”

The City recently acquired a new tool - the Drone Ranger. Here's one of its maiden voyages, flying over our recent Summer of Fun event Glow in the Dark Croquet. #FerndaleParks ... See MoreSee Less

Sweet! What kind of drone?

I think it's super awesome!

I always forget that park exists.

Is it going to be flying around all of ferndale?

Of course it's not legal to fly there, which is a problem. No fly zone!

very cool! I love drones. I need to fix mine.

Nice flying, Riley. You need a call sign...Park Ranger?

Um...shouldn't it be DARK for glow in the DARK croquet??? ...but cool toy nonetheless! 😁

I really see this purchase as a irresponsible use of taxpayer money. Also isn't Ferndale with in 5 miles of a airport?

A few weeks ago this drone was flying over main street in Ferndale, VERY low to traffic and VERY distracting! Please keep it at a more respectful height. Id hate to file a claim against City of Ferndale for causing an accident by flying "their" drone to low!

Very cool! I can think of all kinds of uses for this, to help publicize events, and make cool videos about the city!

What for? Might be a nice tool for the police department. Why was money spent on this?

Chris Hollenbeck

Did your pilot obtain a license from the FAA to operate legally?

Cool

Now we can find out who is burning garbage....

Would it be out of the question to attach guns to the drone? People need to know that Ferndale isn't messing around any longer!
