Census officials report high response rates with 3 months to go in the 2020 census

FERNDALE, Wash. — Regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic and all the social impediments that have arisen from it, it is federal law that a national census be conducted every 10 years and the last was done in 2010.

2020 Census officials reported on July 1st that Washington’s response rate has surpassed the 2010 Census response rate with 67.2% of state households (2.2 million) having responded. Washington is the 6th best-responding state in the United States.

In the city of Ferndale, 72.1% of households have responded to the 2020 Census, placing Ferndale 45th out of Washington’s 281 municipalities. This compares to Whatcom County’s average of 68.6% and the national average of 61.8%.

Washington state hit a major milestone as of July 1st by equaling its self-response rate from the 2010 Census. Washington is the second state to do so.
