City chooses to close playgrounds “out of abundance of caution”

FERNDALE, Wash. — City of Ferndale Public Works staff today, March 19th, posted signs on parks with playground equipment that said the parks were closed.

Ferndale Mayor Greg Hansen said it was done out of an abundance of caution. “We’re continuing down this uncharted path and doing what we can to keep people safe,” he said during a chance encounter with MFN outside the Star Park playground. “There’s no way for us to constantly sanitize the equipment.”

Hansen noted that while people and kids should avoid the equipment, the parks themselves remained open for people to enjoy.

Public Works Supervisor Jim Slaughter said some park bathrooms had been locked due to recent vandalism.
