FERNDALE, Wash. — City staff asked Ferndale City Council to approve a resolution establishing mandatory water restrictions for the 3rd year but with some changes.

During last night’s regular council meeting, the only item on the agenda requiring a decision was a resolution establishing a restricted outdoor watering and irrigation schedule.

The resolution as proposed required outdoor watering and irrigation between June 1st and September 15th be limited to every other day, with even-numbered addresses irrigating only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and odd-numbered addresses irrigating only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. No outdoor watering or irrigation would be authorized on Mondays. Outdoor watering and irrigation would be restricted to between 5pm and 10am and for periods no longer than 30 minutes.

Exceptions included watering outdoor potted plants and hanging baskets, watering newly planted lawns (installed within 6 months of the effective date of the resolution), watering vegetable gardens and drip irrigation systems.

The council amended the resolution by unanimous vote to add the following to and change the following exceptions:

  • watering or irrigating with harvested rainwater
  • recreational uses
  • newly planted lawns and landscaping that were established during the current calendar year
  • “vegetable” gardens was changed to “food-bearing” gardens

It was also required by unanimous vote that the public works director provide council with a status of the water supply annually by March 1st.
