Controlled burns at local houses provide firefighter training

Setting fire to a house and then walking volunteer and career firefighters through the process of locating and knocking down the fire is the best training available according to Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) Division Chief Justin Iverson. With that in mind, Iverson is pretty happy to have 3 controlled burns scheduled between Friday and Tuesday.

On Friday, June 22nd, a house and surrounding accessory buildings at 1537 Main Street will be used for firefighter training. On Monday and Tuesday, June 25th and 26th, the same will occur at 2 houses at 6170 Portal Way.

Instead of demolishing buildings, some homeowners will donate them to WCFD7 to be used for firefighter training. If the buildings are structurally sound, they are welcome donations, Iverson said.

On the days of the controlled burns, several fires will be lit around the buildings between 9am and 4pm providing several opportunities to learn different strategies and scenarios. A final fire will be allowed to consume the building.
