Demolition begins on Ferndale Bob’s Burgers & Brew building

FERNDALE, Wash. — Work has began this morning, Tuesday, September 22nd, to demolish and remove the former location of the Ferndale Bob’s Burgers & Brew at 1781 Main Street.

Building owner Ken Schims of DK Properties told My Ferndale News he had hoped someone would be able to make use of the building. But, after a couple years of offering it to prospective tenants and the onset of the COVID-19 economic crisis, he has decided there are more opportunities in providing a pad on which a tenant could build.

The 3,882-square-foot 2-story building was built in 1975 according to Whatcom County Assessor’s records.

Local amateur historians say the building was built to house a Country Kitchen Restaurant franchise. That lasted a few years but closed following the economic crisis of the late 1970s.

The building reopened for an undetermined time as Bayers and then Hennessy’s, 2 locally-owned restaurants.

It was January of 1991 when the Ferndale Bob’s Burgers & Brew moved from its original Pioneer Center location on 3rd Avenue into the building according to former Ferndale Bob’s Burgers & Brew owner Mike Kildall. The Ferndale location was operated separately from the chain of Bob’s Burgers & Brew locations operated by Kildall’s brother, Bob.

Mike operated the business there until closing it in December 2017.

Mike attended the demolition with many of his past customers in what he described as a tailgate party.
