On Sunday, April 19th at approximately 6:00 AM, deputies were called to the 1000 block of Slater Road for the reported theft of a motor vehicle. The homeowner had been awakened by the sound of his vehicle being started in the driveway and then leaving at a high rate of speed, westbound on Slater Road. The vehicle stolen was a black 1969 restored Chevrolet Chevelle SS and was very unique with a value of around $50,000. Deputies took a stolen vehicle report and the owner of the car got the word out through friends and social media about it being stolen.
At around 8:00 AM, a witness who had seen the social media post about the stolen vehicle reported that it was seen at a residence in the 1900 block of Conifer Drive near Ferndale, Washington and someone known as “Nic” was driving it. As deputies responded to the area, numerous reports began circulating that the vehicle was seen driving around the Custer area of Whatcom County. A short time later, the owner of the vehicle reported that he was following behind the stolen car in the Custer area and then reported that the vehicle had “rammed” him into a ditch when he had tried to pin it in at the dead end of Stein Road. The Sheriff’s Office also received a report from another citizen whose car had been struck by the stolen vehicle when it failed to negotiate a high speed turn at an intersection.
At around 9:00 AM, deputies located the stolen vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Birch Bay Lynden Road. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused and fled. The pursuit of the stolen vehicle continued as the driver headed towards Blaine, Washington. The Blaine Police Department assisted and were moving to intercept the pursuit at Peace Portal Drive and Hughes Avenue. As units converged on the area, the suspect driver spun out and stalled the car. Deputies and officers from the Blaine Police Department and Washington State Patrol were able to box the car in and take the driver into custody without further incident.
Nicholas M. BAILEY, a 28 year old male from Ferndale, Washington, was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on multiple charges. He was arrested for Theft of a Motor Vehicle; Possession of a Stolen Vehicle; Assault 2nd (for intentional striking the victim and ramming him off of the road); Hit and Run to an Attended Vehicle (2 counts) and Felony Eluding.
The stolen vehicle received some damage during the incident from Mr. Bailey’s actions, but was drivable and returned to its rightful owner. No one received any injuries during the incident.
