Driver license expiration dates automatically extended

The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) has temporarily extended the expiration dates of driver licenses according to an April 4th announcement.

Drivers whose licenses expired after March 1, 2020 and have not been renewed and those whose licenses will expire through June 30th can expect to receive a letter from the DOL letting them know the expiration date will be extended for 90 days.

The new expiration dates will automatically show up on a person’s driver record if it is pulled up by law enforcement. New cards will not be issued.

DOL offices have been closed since March 17th and DOL asks drivers whose licenses are up for renewal to renew online, if possible.

Most Washington residents are eligible to renew their driver licenses, identification cards or vehicle registrations online according to DOL. Persons under age 24 and over 70 may renew online for a limited time. In addition, the requirement to visit a licensing office every other renewal has been temporarily suspended.
