Early morning earthquake felt by light-sleepers and insomniacs

A minor earthquake measuring 3.0 struck at 1:40am this morning, causing ripples of concern among light sleepers several miles away, including Ferndale, Lynden, Bellingham and Anacortes.

According to the US Geological Survey, the temblor occurred under Bellingham Bay, directly south of the Nooksack River delta, at a depth of 9 miles.

Over 200 people, some up to 50 miles away from the epicenter, reported weak-to-light shaking (locations shaded in light blue in the graphic) to the US Geological Survey.

Several in the Ferndale area reported on social media to have heard “popping noises” immediately after the quake.

It felt and sounded the same as it would if a 300lb person fell off the top bunk of a set of bunkbeds, in a small house. Very quick and intense.
