FERNDALE, Wash. — Property owners at the corner of Grandview Road and N Enterprise Road got an abrupt wakening when a passerby knocked on their door about 1am this morning, February 16th, alerting them that plastic-wrapped silage bales stacked in their side yard were on fire.
According to unconfirmed radio transmissions, a Ferndale Police officer was one of the first on the scene and used his fire extinguisher to minimize property damage and prevent the fire from spreading through the grass to nearby buildings. Whatcom County Fire District 7 firefighters were dispatched to the scene about 1:05am.
The property owner said the stack of about a dozen white bales had been spray-painted to read as a political sign. Family members had restored the sign by morning.
The cost of the bales were estimated at $45 each. The family is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonist(s).
