Early morning rollover crash sends 3 to the hospital

Washington State Patrol (WSP) reported a single-vehicle injury crash was the reason why southbound I-5 at was closed at the Slater Road interchange for several hours this morning, June 1st.

According to emergency services dispatch information, fire, aid and law enforcement personnel were dispatched to a report of a crash just south of the Slater Road interchange in the southbound lanes just before 4am.

Bellingham Fire Department Chief Bill Hewett said it took time to extricate the occupants from the vehicle. A male and 2 females were transported by aid crews to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in stable condition.

Hewett said it appeared the vehicle may have been attempting to enter I-5 southbound using the on-ramp but began to merge into the southbound lanes too early, causing the vehicle to go sideways and roll.

WSP Trooper Heather Axtman said the driver, yet unidentified as of this story, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Axtman also reported both southbound lanes were reopened about 6:30am.
