Ferndale 12U Cal Ripken baseball team wins 2017 World Series

celebrating world series win
Players on the Ferndale 12U Cal Ripken baseball team celebrate as they win the 2017 World Series in Clemmons, North Carolina.

The score was Ferndale 6 and Cedar Cliff 4. Middle Atlantic region champion, Cedar Cliff was at bat in the bottom of the 6th. Cedar Cliff had rebounded from a 5-point deficit. There were 2 outs and one runner at 2nd base and the tying runner at 1st base. Unfortunately, that was as good as it was going to get as they ultimately fell to Ferndale, Cedar Cliff’s first loss in the 2017 World Series tournament in Clemmons, North Carolina.

A final pitch struck out the batter and history was made as the team of 12-year-olds became the first from Ferndale to win a World Series.

In addition to winning a state tournament and a regional tournament to get into World Series competition, the Ferndale team played 6 teams in the tournament to get to the final championship game. Ferndale lost only one game during World Series play, ironically against the team they would come up against for the championship, Cedar Cliff.

Fans are planning to line Main Street to greet the team when it returns Friday evening after a long cross-country flight.

  1. Thanks Joe for reporting on this fabulous team. I would never have know about the Leader Block hosting the viewing of the game if you hadn’t posted it. It was really fun to watch these boys play and WIN.
Thanks to the Leader Block for being such gracious hosts. And thank you Molly Gandy and Steve Malpezi for keeping it all together so we could enjoy the game. Well done. Congratulations to the team, coaches and families that made this happen. What a great achievement! Your hard work paid off!
