2 to 4 inches of fresh light and dry windblown snow covers most of the Ferndale area making driving or even getting out of driveways a challenge for many as they attempt to head out today, Monday, February 11th.

City and county crews worked overnight plowing, sanding and keeping priority routes clear as gusty winds continued to blow the snow around.

Some less-traveled roads were reported to be blocked by snow drifts. Based on local traffic cameras, roads to the north appeared to have more compact snow on them than those to the south.

Ferndale School District officials announced last night that classes at all schools would be canceled today. Several other businesses and agencies also announced closures or delayed openings as a result of the weather.

  • Ferndale Food Bank

Whatcom Transportation Authority officials say buses are chained up and reportedly running on all routes although delays can be expected. No “Flex” stops are being made today though.

National Weather Service forecasters have issued a Winter Storm Warning that will be in effect from 4pm today through 6pm tomorrow, Tuesday. The statement warns heavy snow is expected with accumulations of 5 to 8 inches possible by tomorrow. Forecasters say to expect up to an inch today and 2 to 4 more inches overnight. Gusty northeast winds are also expected to continue up to 30mph.

The next weather system is expected to move northward across western Washington and was reported to be producing light snow over Olympia by 8am today.
