According to FAC member Colleen Harper, the Project Neighborly grant had been applied for by Ferndale City Council Member Rebecca Xczar.
Harper said the grant will be used to support volunteer efforts to create ground murals in alleys between 1st and 2nd Avenues on both sides of Main Street and off 3rd Avenue between Main Street and Vista Drive.
The ground murals will be applied to the alleys’ asphalt surface. “It will most likely not fill the entire space, but create a sense of continuity and movement down the alley,” Harper explained. Pointing to the many examples viewable online, Harper noted the hole in the ground optical illusion type is “not one we plan to do.”
Final decisions on which alleys and the designs have not been made yet, Harper said.
FAC has been responsible for other murals around the Ferndale area, including some on water tanks and on the City Hall annex building. Another FAC project currently in progress is a tile mosaic to be located on a retaining wall outside the Ferndale Public Library.
According to the City of Ferndale website, “The Ferndale Arts Commission is charged with enhancing the community by advising on public art and community aesthetic enhancement.”
