FERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom Humane Society, Ferndale Police and firefighters with Whatcom County Fire District 7 responded to an animal rescue call this morning at VanderYacht Park about 11:30am today, January 16th.
According to WCFD7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman, a dog had been out at the dog park at VanderYacht Park with its owner when it ran through an opening in the brush along the river’s edge. The dog ended up in the river and unable to get footing to climb back up the slope.
Hoffman said the dog had been in the river about 20 minutes when they responded.
Working during a heavy snow fall, firefighters used a ladder off of a fire engine to reach and rescue the dog. Hoffman said the dog’s owner happily took possession of the dog and was going to take it somewhere to warm up.
Temperatures around the Ferndale area were in the 20s today. According to a US Geological Survey report, river temperature was about 36°F today.
