Santa and Mrs. Claus have Ferndale on their calendar this Friday because they, along with many Ferndale neighbors, will be starting their evening with the lighting of the tree at Centennial Riverwalk Park.

Ferndale Chamber of Commerce officials, hosts of the annual event – now in its 10th year, say to expect cookies and cocoa, caroling with the Mount Baker Toppers and, as mentioned above, an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus. The event kicks off at 5pm.

Following the tree lighting, Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead a procession to Pioneer Park where the 25th annual Olde Fashioned Christmas will be underway.

The Olde Fashioned Christmas in Pioneer Park draws families from all over to experience holiday celebrations during a simpler time.

Visitors will be greeted by members of the Ferndale Heritage Society, hosts of the annual event, decked out in authentic pioneer attire and each of the 15 historic cedar log cabins will be aglow with decorations.

The event includes hands-on crafts for children, old-fashioned displays and music. For instance, there will be carolers singing in the 1876 Congregational Church, children writing their letters to Santa in the one-room school house, workers at the post office handling those letters for delivery to the North Pole (from where a reply can be expected) and dancing, crafts and smells of traditional Christmas baking can be found in the 1873 Jenni House.

Shoppers can find inexpensive gifts at the Parker House cabin’s general store and pharmacy.

Horse drawn carriage rides through downtown Ferndale will begin and end at Pioneer Park while Santa and Mrs. Claus entertain young and old guests alike in the stately Shields House.
