Richmond, B.C.-based organic breakfast and snack food company Nature’s Path has partnered with the Lynden-based Open Hands to prepare bags of breakfast and snack foods to be given out to all middle school students in the Ferndale School District.

Employees and volunteers from Nature’s Path Blaine plant, Ferndale School District and Open Hands have been busy this week at the Blaine plant preparing bags of breakfast and snack foods to be distributed to over 1,100 students at Horizon and Vista Middle Schools.

In Whatcom County, 38.7% of  students are eligible for free and reduced lunch; that means they aren’t getting enough food to lead a healthy life. As an organic food company, Nature’s Path is committed to helping address this need.

Teachers and staff at Horizon Middle School and Vista Middle School will make the breakfast foods and snacks accessible to all of their students according to a Nature’s Path spokesperson. “As 1 in 5 households in Whatcom County use the food bank, the goal is to provide nutritious breakfast and snack options for food-insecure students in the community.”

An elementary teacher said the food support is appreciated because it addresses student physical needs, but even more importantly, it makes students feel noticed and loved.
