Ferndale Police Department takes back prescription drugs Saturday

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 24th, and it aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.

Drugs can be dropped off Saturday between 10am and 2pm at the Ferndale Police Department, no questions asked. Only pills or patches can be accepted. Liquids, needles or sharps cannot be accepted.

Drug Take Back Day is a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) event that addresses 2 vital public safety and public health issues.

  • Medicines in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet.
  • Americans are now advised that usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
