FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) announced this morning that, with the exception of the Deming and North Fork libraries, all WCLS public libraries would be closed today, Tuesday, September 15th, including curbside pick-up and drop-offs. This closure includes the Ferndale Public Library.
Air quality has ranged between the “UNHEALTHY” and “VERY UNHEALTHY” zones over the past week due to southerly winds pulling smoke into the Puget Sound region from wildfires in eastern Washington, Oregon and California. Forecasters with the National Weather Service Seattle office said yesterday they expected air quality would improve only slightly through mid-week.
WCLS Libraries have been providing contactless curbside drop-off and pick-up service since early June when state officials allowed Whatcom County to move from Phase 1 to Phase 2 of the governor’s Safe Start plan due to health safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While library buildings have not been open to the public during Phase 2, they have been open to staff. This has enabled providing contactless curbside holds pick-up service and book returns during regular library hours as explained in the following WCLS-provided video.
