Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7), which provides service to the City of Ferndale and surrounding area, needs to fill a vacancy on its 3-member Board of Fire Commissioner after Commissioner Al Saab recently announced he would be retiring his position in August.
WCFD7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman said the remaining two Commissioners will appoint Saab’s replacement.
The Board has asked anyone interested in being considered for appointment to the Board position submit a letter of interest and 1-page resume to the following address before July 1, 2018.
Whatcom County Fire District 7
Attn: Board Opening
PO Box 1599
Ferndale, WA 98248
To qualify, a candidate must be registered voter residing within the boundaries of the WCFD7.
The two incumbent Board members will form a panel and take input on the qualifications of the interested persons before making their decision according to Hoffman.
The appointed Commissioner will serve at least until the November 2019 General Election.
The Board position will be placed on the ballot during the 2019 General Election (it was too late to get it on this year’s ballot) and voters will choose from candidates who choose to run at that time.
The elected Commissioner will serve out the remainder of that position’s term, until December 31, 2021.
Commissioners are responsible for governing the operations of the fire district including:
- Determining levels of service and establishing goals
- Determining type and level of funding
- Approving budgets and tax levies
- Establishing policies and approving operational procedures
- Employing key personnel and supervising the fire chief
- Guiding strategic planning
- Representing the district to the public at a local and state level
