Firefighters were called to the scene of a large commercial structure fire this morning shortly after 7am at the east end of Aldergrove Road alongside I-5.

A neighbor said they called 9-1-1 after noticing smoke coming out from under the roofline and seeing flames by a door on the backside of the building.

No injuries were reported and no one was in the building at the time the fire was detected. The building is the location of the offices for Friberg Construction and is also used to store equipment and supplies for the company.

Owner John Friberg said it was a 25-year-old building. “I’m just thankful no one was hurt,” Friberg said. The building is insured according to Friberg.

Friberg said there was a 1-ton pickup and a dump truck in the building.

Firefighters were able to connect to two hydrants located at each end of the building. Friberg recalled when he installed those, “just in case something like this were to happen.”

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Dean Crosswhite said the cause of the fire would require investigation and it appeared most everything in the building was lost.

One firefighter was assessed by medics on the scene and released without requiring treatment.
