FERNDALE, Wash. — Last night’s car versus pole crash resulted in the driver being booking into Whatcom County Jail while Puget Sound Energy crews continued repairing the downed pole into the early morning hours.
According to Ferndale Police Sergeant Kevin Davis, officers were dispatched to the intersection of LaBounty Drive and W Smith Road at about 9:25pm yesterday, December 26th, due to a report of an injury crash. While responding they noted power was out along Main Street east of the Nooksack River. Updated information said the vehicle had collided with a power pole.
The officers discovered a pickup truck with the power pole resting on top of it, Davis said. The pickup was determined to be unoccupied and a search of the surrounding area was conducted. The registered owner of the pickup was located hiding approximately 30 feet away in some bushes.
The driver was identified as Bonnie Rindahl, age 37, from Lynden. After Whatcom County Fire District 7 personnel cleared Rindahl medically she was taken into custody by the Washington State Patrol and booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of driving under the influence and driving on a suspended driver’s license.
Davis noted Puget Sound Energy personnel were able to get power back on to all customers in approximately 1 hour but crews continued to work through the night to get the pole replaced by early this morning.
