Initial report: Former Ferndale Police Chief Knapp reported hospitalized

FERNDALE, Wash. — Unofficial sources report former Police Chief Michael Knapp was struck by a vehicle while walking across a street in Lynden late this afternoon. His injuries were described as critical and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Officials with the City of Lynden, where Knapp has been recently serving as interim police chief issued the following:

Today, November 5, 2019 at 5:15 pm there was a car versus pedestrian crash at Grover and 4th Streets in Lynden, Washington.  Interim Lynden Police Chief Michael Knapp was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle.  He is being flown to Harborview Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries.   The accident scene is active and currently being investigated by the Washington State Patrol. Further information will be provided in the forthcoming days.

The Washington State Patrol was dispatched to the scene and began an investigation of the crash according to Trooper Heather Axtman.

Axtman said Knapp, age 79, was struck by a 1988 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 19-year-old male. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with investigators.

Axtman said Knapp was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham before being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
