Free heart screening to be offered at FHS for ages 14 to 24

What has become an annual Teen Heart Screening event comes to Ferndale High School this year. Free advanced heart screenings are available for youth and young adults ages 14 to 24 living in Whatcom County.

Screenings are provided in partnership between PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center and Ferndale High School. The clinical and training portions of the screening are offered by PeaceHealth St Joseph Cardiovascular Center clinicians in collaboration with Whatcom County Fire Districts,  EMS professionals and community support.

During last year’s screenings (February 2017) at Meridian High School, of the 191 students who participated, there were 13 positive findings and those students were referred for follow-up care.

The painless and noninvasive screenings will be provided on May 30th and will include:

  • Review of teen’s Health Screening Survey including personal and family health history
  • Height and weight measurement
  • Blood pressure
  • ECG/EKG (electrocardiogram)
  • Chest-compression CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training
  • On-site physician review of test results
  • Echocardiogram (if deemed appropriate and ordered by physician)

Ferndale School District youth and young adults interested in participating in this free screening need a parent or legal guardian to complete and sign the Heart Health Survey on behalf of their teen or youth (if under age 18). A completed and signed Heart Health Survey (click link to download) needs to be provided to the Athletic Secretary at the Ferndale High School main office on or before Tuesday, May 29th.

There will be times allotted for youth and young adults from outside the Ferndale School District beginning at 2pm. Call the Cardiovascular Center at 360-788-6197 to reserve those time slots. These participants must bring a completed and signed Heart Health Survey (click link to download) with them to the screening.
