FERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom County Fire District 7 firefighters were dispatched shortly after 10am today, July 23rd, due to a report of flames and smoke visible inside a building at Republic Services waste disposal facility at 1524 Slater Road.

Fire Chief Larry Hoffman said there was an isolated fire in a pile of garbage inside the building that was quickly controlled.

Hoffman said they do not take calls to these facilities lightly. “When we arrive we usually have no idea about what materials may be burning. The potential for a hazardous fire situation or dangerous smoke is always there.”
