About 4:30am today, Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) and Ferndale Police were dispatched to a report of a 2-vehicle crash on Main Street near Old Settler Drive.
Ferndale Police Sergeant Kevin Davis said an eastbound 1990 Acura Integra passenger car had drifted into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2004 BMW 325 passenger car.
The driver and passenger from the Acura were transported by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center according to Davis. The driver and passenger from the BMW had only minor injuries and declined treatment according to WCFD7 Division Chief Ben Boyko.
A Washington State Patrol investigator was called to the scene to assess whether driving under the influence played a role in the crash.
The driver of the Acura, according to Davis, Zachary B Demke, age 21, was later booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with driving under the influence (DUI) according to jail records.
Davis said both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed. The road was partially blocked for over an hour as a result of the crash and subsequent emergency response.
