First responders were dispatched to the 7200 block of Portal Way due to a report of a car versus bicyclists crash about 11:35am today, August 5th.
According to witnesses, a gold Volvo passenger vehicle had clipped an adult male and a juvenile male riding their bicycles on Portal Way near Faris Road.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said both cyclists were transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center via advanced life support (ALS) protocol.
It was initially reported the suspect vehicle had left the scene. While law enforcement and medical crews were at the scene, witnesses pointed to a vehicle driving past that matched the description of the Volvo and a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper immediately pulled the vehicle over on Portal Way. The trooper could be seen giving the driver a field sobriety test, placing the driver in handcuffs and then placing them in the rear seat of the trooper’s vehicle.
WSP Trooper Heather Axtman said while their investigation is ongoing, Delaney K Pratt, age 68, of Mount Vernon, was booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and hit and run.
Axtman said WSP dispatch received multiple civilian reports of a possible DUI matching the 2005 gold Volvo Pratt was driving when taken into custody. The first was at 10:36am when the vehicle was reported northbound on I-5 in the area of the Cook Road interchange in Skagit County. Another caller reported the vehicle exiting I-5 northbound at the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange at 11:13am and then another reported the vehicle estimated to be going 70mph in a 30mph at 11:30am in an unknown location; that call being just minutes before first responders were dispatched to the report of the crash.
