Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) fire and aid crews were dispatched to the scene of a crash on northbound I-5 north of Grandview Road last night, Thursday, June 28th, shortly after 10pm.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) investigated and according to a press memo 1 vehicle was a black 2000 Volkswagen Passat 4-door driven by Tristen N. Florence, age 21, of Ferndale. WSP reported the Volkswagen was northbound in the left lane at milepost 266 when it maneuvered into the right lane driving between two motorcycles, striking one motorcycle’s mirror before losing control and ending up in the median.
Florence and his passenger, Makyla M. Carpenter, age 18, of Ferndale, were both injured in the crash. According to WCFD7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman, one of the 2 Volkswagen occupants had been ejected. Both were transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in critical condition, Hoffman said. Hoffman described the incident as a “high-speed” crash.
The motorcycle rider, Kevin Vo, age 22, of Surrey, BC., was not injured and was able to drive from the scene.
It was not known whether either of the Volkswagen occupants were wearing their seat belts according to the WSP.
The Volkswagen was considered a total loss and impounded by the WSP.
Speed and alcohol were cited as the cause of the crash. A charge of vehicular assault is expected according to the WSP.
