FERNDALE, Wash. — National Weather Service Seattle office forecasters are turning their attention to locations in the southern regions of western Washington due to expected heavy snow over the weekend. But Whatcom County is not expected to go without receiving some snow, perhaps just not as much.
Frigid Artic air continues to be pulled into Whatcom County via a Fraser Valley outflow event that resulted in high winds yesterday, February 11th. A weather station located on Sandy Point reported an 85mph gust yesterday while stations further inland reported peak gusts between 50 and 60mph.
PSE reported over 1670 customers on Lummi Island and the south end of the Lummi Peninsula were without power this morning due to an outage that began about 4:45pm yesterday. Downed trees/vegetation were cited as the cause.
Hundreds of Puget Sound Energy customers were reported to have been impacted yesterday by several localized outages throughout the day (see graphic below) and have since had their power restored.

As can be seen in the graphic above, areas impacted were within the narrow channel of powerful northeasterly winds created by Fraser Valley outflow events.
Northeasterly winds are expected to continue through tomorrow afternoon although not as strong as yesterday with gusts around 30mph expected.
Temperatures were around 20° in the Ferndale area this morning. Some warming is expected with area temperatures ranging between the upper 20s and mid 30s through the weekend.

Periods of light snow are expected beginning after midnight tonight and continuing into Monday when snow is expected to transition into rain as temperatures are expected to climb to around 40°. Up to 6 inches of snow accumulation in the Ferndale area is possible before the transition to rain.
