City officials say a Ferndale resident recently mishandled a rifle in an apartment and accidentally discharged it into the ceiling. The bullet caused damage to the apartment above but there were no injuries. Police discovered nothing in the Ferndale Municipal Code enabled them to charge the individual with unlawfully discharging his weapon within the city.
As a result, approval of Ferndale Municipal Code section 9.04.080, Discharging Firearms, will be placed before councilmembers for their approval at this Monday’s regular City Council meeting. In short, the code section states it is unlawful to discharge a firearm in the Ferndale city limits.
In addition, the section language will make it unlawful to shoot a bow, sling shot, BB gun or other device unless aimed at an inanimate target and it does not strike a person, bird or animal or land on public or private property other than property whose owner has given express permission.
A violation of this section 9.04.080 will be considered a misdemeanor.
