I-5 crash at Portal Way interchange sends 1 to hospital

FERNDALE, Wash. — Fire and law enforcement responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-5 at the Portal Way interchange today, September 22nd, about 9:45am.

As this story was being written (10:15am), a lane of northbound I-5 was blocked by emergency responder vehicles.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Justin Iverson said aid crews had transported the driver to PeaceHealth St Josephs Medical Center under advance life support (ALS) protocol. Iverson said there were no other occupants or vehicles involved.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman, it appeared the driver of a black Audi had suffered a medical emergency and was estimated to have been traveling 80 to 90mph at the time of the crash.
