UPDATED: Large law enforcement presence in Calico Loop neighborhood ends after shots heard

A large contingent of law enforcement personnel from the Ferndale Police Department and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) were seen in the south end of the new Calico Loop residential development this afternoon.

Ferndale Police Sergeant Travis Card said Ferndale Police went to a residence in the 1900 block of Calico Loop to conduct a welfare check on a possibly suicidal individual. Upon arriving, the officers heard a single gunshot from within the residence. They requested assistance from WCSO to secure the scene before entering.

Card said WCSO SWAT team along with Border Patrol were able to safely secure the residence at 6:45pm.

The initial information indicated the sole occupant in the residence had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Card said the investigation is on-going and will be assisted by the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Neighbors waiting outside the perimeter reported hearing what sounded like gunfire about 6:30pm and soon after they were told it was safe for them to return to their homes.

The only visible damage were broken upper and lower window panes of a 3rd-story window on the front of the multi-residential building.

Card said entry tools commonly used by law enforcement were likely the cause of the gunshot-like noises heard and the broken windows.
