Two Ferndale girls have been traveling to Woodinville two to three days a week this summer to practice and compete with their Absolute Blast 16U-A ’99 team. And their hard work is paying off as they now head to Nationals with their team.
Drew Westford and Amanda Baker and their teammates will be taking their spectacular 20 – 5 record to the ASA Nationals in Salem, Oregon, Sunday, July 19th and then to PGF National Championship in Huntington Beach, California, Saturday, August 1st. This culminates a season of traveling all over the United States playing other high-caliber teams.
Westford’s father, Bo, has also been making the long commutes to Woodinville given he is a co-coach. According to Bo, “This is a different level of play than high school competition can provide. We intentionally seek out the best teams in the country to play against.”
As a result of playing at this level, Baker and Westford are well-established and visible in the fastpitch world. But it’s not at all easy, says Bo. “You have to love the game, be dedicated to developing your skills and be committed to yourself and your team.”
