FERNDALE, Wash. — A sudden hailstorm is being blamed for several traffic incidents on both northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 south of the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange this afternoon.
First responders were dispatched to the area about 2:30pm today, December 11th, due to reports of a multi-car incident.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said there was a total of 5 vehicles involved but that none appeared to have collided, instead having spun out after losing traction in the hail.
Crews with North Whatcom Fire & Rescue contacted 2 vehicles in the southbound lanes and WCFD7 crews contacted 3 in the northbound lanes according to Boyko. Only a driver in 1 vehicle required medical assistance.
Washington State Trooper Heather Axtman said a white 2002 GMC Denali slid while traveling northbound on I-5 and left the road, rolled and ended up on its side on Creasy Road.
Boyko said the driver of the vehicle that rolled was transported from the scene under advance life support protocol (ALS) to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center. There were 3 dogs in the vehicle that rolled. 1 was deceased at the scene while the other 2 ran off. 1 of the 2 that ran off was found and Whatcom County Humane Society had been contacted.
