It is not known how long the large nest, or aerie as they are technically known, had been in the tree but some neighbors recall it being there more than two decades ago.
People heading down W Axton Road had no difficulty seeing the large nest north of the road between Aldrich Road and the Guide Meridian. According to experts, such nests average 5-feet in diameter and are often reused by the same nesting eagles year after year.
The missing nest was noticed after the recent wind and ice event.
For several years, a pair of bald eagles, perhaps the same pair, had called the nest their own.
After the windstorm, at the base of the tree lay scattered several large broken branches, including one the nest was atop.
