UPDATED: M6.0x2, M5.7 and M5.2 earthquakes reported west of Vancouver Island this morning – no tsunami threat

An earthquake registering magnitude 5.2 was reported by seismologists this morning about 8:44am.

The earthquake was centered 125 miles west of Port Alice, approximately 360 miles northwest of Ferndale. Initial reports by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network indicate it occurred at a depth of about 6 miles.

No tsunami was expected as a result of the quake according to the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer Alaska.

The earthquake center was located near the northern tip of the Juan de Fuca plate (also known as the Explorer microplate). This is an area with relatively frequent earthquakes as indicated in the graphic below.

There were no reports of injuries or damage from the earthquake.

UPDATE 11:20am
A second earthquake of similar magnitude was reported at 11:13am in the same area as this morning’s earlier quake. Updated reports set the strength at M5.7 and depth of about 6 miles. No tsunami was expected.

UPDATE 11:55am
A third earthquake of similar magnitude was reported at 11:50am in the same area as this morning’s earlier 2 quakes. Updated reports set the strength at M6.0 and depth of about 6 miles. No tsunami was expected.

UPDATE 1pm
A fourth earthquake of similar magnitude was reported at 12:56pm in the same area as this morning’s earlier 3 quakes. Initial reports set the strength at M6.0 and depth of about 6 miles. No tsunami was expected.
