Morning crash sends driver to hospital

Washington State Patrol and Whatcom County Fire District 7 responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash this morning on Barr Road just north of Mountain View Road.

According to a WSP spokesperson, investigators determined the vehicle was heading south in the 5700 block of Barr Road when it went across the oncoming lane of traffic. It then left the road, glancing off a power pole and going into a ditch along the road. “Vehicle then tipped onto its nose in the ditch and rotated,” according to WSP.

The WSP said the driver, age 16, believed he fell asleep at the wheel. He sustained lacerations to his hands and feet and was transported by ambulance to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham due over concern of a concussion or other head injury. The driver was the only occupant at the time of the crash.

A power outage was reported in the area and Puget Sound Energy responded to assess the damage to their pole.
