Nearby: Coast Guard calls off search for missing man

Coast Guard officials said that they have called off the search for a man reported missing after he failed to return Sunday night after a sailing trip to Cypress Island.

The Coast Guard said they called off the search at 3pm today after searching over 360 square nautical miles for approximately 15 hours.

Nick Saling, age 53, was reported missing by his sister yesterday. The Coast Guard reported finding his yellow 25-foot sailboat northeast of Lummi Island yesterday.

Crews involved in the search include:

  • Coast Guard Station Bellingham
  • Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles
  • Coast Guard Cutter Terrapin
  • Naval Air Station – Whidbey Island
  • Whatcom County Fire Department
  • Lummi Island Police Department
  • Lummi Island Fire Department

“After careful consideration and an extensive review of all factors involved, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend its active search efforts,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Matt Michaelis. “We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Saling.”

  1. Every search whatcom county search and rescue are on, but yet they never get listed, why is that! Just so u know WCSAR will be searching again tomorrow again! Please update this story to include the hard working SAR volunteers!

  2. Although credit is always appreciated, Lummi Island does not have a police department. I appreciate and enjoy your good works in reporting Ferndale news and happenings.
