I recently read a letter here from Jon and Diane Mutchler [link added by editor] that implied that only Republican candidates for Legislature support the police. The opposite is true.
Rep. Sharon Shewmake and City Councilwoman Alicia Rule have always voted to fund police budgets and both oppose violence. That’s their record. But when politicians grandstand and vote no on the budget, they are voting to defund police. Senator Ericksen voted against police funding in 2018 and former Rep. Buys, who Mutchler supported, voted against police funding in 2017. Charges of “defunding” and other derogatory statements about police appear to have originated from political opponents rather than from the candidates themselves and have no basis in fact or action.
Where Rep. Shewmake and Councilwoman Rule differ from their opponents is the depth and breadth they bring to Whatcom County as we work to make sure people are healthy and safe, and that our economy recovers after Covid. Rep. Shewmake is the only economist in the Legislature, and that matters now more than ever. We need someone laser focused on a proactive recovery that brings small cities and rural areas along, rather than just the cities.
Alicia Rule has served as President of the Blaine Downtown Alliance and a recovery that focuses on small business and main streets across Washington means we will do better here. Please join me in voting for Rep. Sharon Shewmake and Alicia Rule.
