Overnight windstorm knocks down trees, leaves 1000s without power in the area

FERNDALE, Wash. — Puget Sound Energy is responding to over 300,000 customers throughout the Puget Sound region who are without power this morning after strong windstorm blew through western Washington overnight.

There are upwards of 4,000 PSE customers without power in Whatcom County according to Whatcom County Deputy Director of Emergency Management John Gargett. Those without power may be waiting a while for repairs to restore power since, as of 6am this morning, crews were waiting for high winds to subside to safe levels according to Gargett.

PSE said they were operating their Emergency Coordination Center and all “local storm bases” to coordinate restoration efforts.

As of 7am, most of Ferndale was reported to be with power according to PSE except for a few localized outages impacting over a couple hundred addresses.

Comcast reported about 500 of their customers in the Ferndale area were without their services as of 7am.

Weather forecast models expected winds to increase around midnight but shortly after 9pm a gust of 67mph had been recorded in Ferndale. Gusts of 70mph were recorded about 1am. The strong southwesterly winds were accompanied by heavy rains.

As the sun comes up, it is expected downed trees and other debris and damage may be discovered. Drivers and pedestrians are advised to use care.
