Pedestrian struck by car while in Main Street crosswalk

Ferndale Police report a man walking his bike while accompanied by his wife was struck by a car as they crossed Main Street yesterday, Sunday, February 18th, about 11:40am.

According the Ferndale Police Lieutenant Bill Hatchett, the two were crossing Main Street at 2nd Avenue from the southeast corner to the northeast corner the man was struck by a southbound car turning eastbound onto Main Street. Hatchett said in an email,

The signal for him [the driver] was green at the time. As the driver of the vehicle was making the left turn, the sun was in his eyes and he didn’t see the subjects in the crosswalk. When he made the turn, his vehicle struck the male subject in the crosswalk causing some minor injuries.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said they transported the man BLS (basic life support) to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Hatchett said the driver was issued an infraction for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

A month ago, another pedestrian was struck in the same crosswalk and also required transport by ambulance to the hospital.
